(Adapted from: The Enormous Turnip Story)
There was once a man called Wally who was Ms Nielsen's partner. One winter's end, just before the
beginning of spring, he took a piece of Kumara, grew some roots from it and gave it to Wainui Beach School. The kids at Wainui Beach School planted it in the ground. Most days they watered it. The roots went down and the shoots went up. The
small piece of Kumara was soon the size of a tomato, a potato, then a man's head
and still it kept growing.
One day in autumn a student said, “Pull that kumara up please! I
want to cook it.” So some kids went out and took hold of the kumara top
and pulled and pulled but the kumara wouldn't budge. They tried again,
and as they did, they sang a little song:
Heave-ho, heave-ho! Pull the kumara free.
Heave-ho, heave-ho! We'll have it for our tea. They sang and they pulled, they pulled and they sang but the kumara would not
budge. They called out to their friends. “Can you help us?” And the students grabbed
the kumara, the other students grabbed them and together they pulled and
sang. Heave-ho, heave-ho... They sang and they pulled, they pulled and
they sang but the kumara would not budge.
The students called out to even more students, “Come and help.” The students grabbed the kumara, the other students grabbed them and even more students grabbed the other students and together they all pulled and sang. Heave-ho, heave-ho...
They sang and they pulled... But the kumara would not budge.
The students called out to even, even more students. ALL the students grabbed the
kumara and each other and even a sheep dog helped and a little mouse and this time, the enormous kumara popped out.
I wondering what delicious dish it will be turned into for Mara kai.
WOW...that is big! I hope you showed Wally this photo!
