Our Wonderful, Wooden Seats and Vegetable Garden

On Monday Kaya, Isabella and Teifi asked Mr Mac a few questions.
Mr Mac is building a vegetable garden by room 1, 2, 3 and 4. He is using planks to make the area deeper and adding more soil. The roots can grow deeper and it will make the vegetables grow taller. He is also putting in an irrigation system to help water the plants in summer.  The seat around the garden is for sitting on and to easily pick the vegetables.

One Potato, Two Potatoes and....Lots of Wedges!

Room 9 found nearly a bucket full of potatoes under the polythene.  Mrs Nielsen kindly took them home and washed them.  Then she bought some sour cream and salsa to school.  Fly helped the kids cut the potatoes into wedges and cover them with some oil.  They sprinkled on a little bit of salt and some rosemary from the rosemary plant that is growing outside the school hall.  We roasted them in the oven in the staffroom.  The wedges smelled really yummy!
We had to make sure that none of the teachers ate any!
After lunch we sat and ate our wedges!
Isn't it amazing how we can grow our own food!

One Potato, Two Potatoes...

The children from Room 9 went up to the gardens last week to harvest our school's potatoes!
We were pretty excited because we got to do lots of digging and because Mrs Saunders had tried a new way of planting potatoes!
We couldn't wait to see what we would find under the polythene!
It was like a treasure hunt!

Seaweed

Last Friday Room 3, 4, 7 and 10 students headed down to the beach to collect seaweed. Bags and buckets were filled with lots of seaweed found straight out from the front of the school at Wainui Beach. Students did well lugging heavy bags back across the road to be stored at the school.

On Wednesday Room 4 students put this seaweed around the school's fruit trees. We made sure we kept it clear from around the tree trunks but still near the tree. It will help keep moisture around the roots on long hot days while also providing excellent nutrients for the trees.

We can't wait for our fruit trees to start growing fruit!
